Hosgri Fault Transpressional Slip Rates Reproduce Observed Central California Coast Uplift Rates

چکیده

Abstract Coastal uplift is a common feature of Pacific Rim tectonic deformation. The 1989 Mw 7.0 Loma Prieta earthquake illustrated that reverse-oblique slip on transpressive segment the predominantly horizontal San Andreas transform fault produces coastal uplift. In west-central California 400 km long Gregorio-Hosgri system near-vertical to steeply northeast-dipping, reverse-oblique, dextral strike-slip faults also contribute Published southern Hosgri rates are ∼4× reverse rates. Viscoelastic deformation modeling using published transpressional along reproduces observed emergent marine terrace rates, offshore morphology, and crustal structure from Luis Obispo Bay Estero Bay. Our rate constrained by unique combination measurements: (1) reverse- zone (HFZ) (2) ≤125 ka onshore adjacent HFZ. previously proposed conceptual rigid block models central coast (CCC) invoke local thrust or explain Observed alone rigorously reproduce CCC.

Holocene slip rates along the Owens Valley fault, California: Implications for the recent evolution of the Eastern California Shear Zone

One of the largest historical earthquakes in California occurred in 1872 along the Owens Valley fault located along the western margin of the Eastern California Shear Zone. New paleoseismic and optically stimulated luminescence data are the first to bracket the timing of the pre-1872 rupture to between 3.3 6 0.3 and 3.8 6 0.3 ka. These data yield an earthquake recurrence interval between 4100 a...

Transpressional segment boundaries in strike-slip fault systems offshore southern California: Implications for fluid expulsion and cold seep habitats

The importance of tectonics and fluid flow in controlling cold seep habitats has long been appreciated at convergent margins but remains poorly understood in strike-slip systems. Here we present geophysical, geochemical, and biological data from an activemethane seep offshore fromDelMar, California, in the inner California borderlands (ICB). The location of this seep appears controlled by local...

New zealand marine terraces: uplift rates.

WL iLLiAM B. BULL AND ALAN F. Cooper (1) identify as marine terrace remnants 18 "notches" or steps at altitudes up to 1700 m on the ridge crests southeast of the Alpine fault, New Zealand. They infer late Quatemary uplift rates on this upthrown side of the fault at three study areas. Their conclusions are based on (i) morphology ofthe steps, which are said to resemble eroded marine cliffs and s...

Backstripping dip-slip fault histories: apparent slip rates for the Miocene of the Vienna Basin

Analysis of deformational histories along polyphase reactivated faults commonly is based on the dating of cross-cutting relationships using relative ages of offset strata or geochronological ages of syntectonically grown minerals within fault planes. However, ten Veen and Postma (1999) and ten Veen and Kleinspehn (2000) introduced a new approach to reconstructing the vertical component of synse...
